More than blue

Sapphires are versatile in their beauty

One of the “big 3” gemstones, sapphires come from the corundum mineral family, deriving from the Latin sapphirus. Sapphires are rated as 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making them almost as durable as diamonds which have a rating of 10. Though most commonly known for its deep blue colour, sapphires can be found in all colours except for red. Red corundum stones are classified as rubies.

Sapphires can come in yellow, orange, green, pink, purple and blue hues and are found all over the world including Australia, India, Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Australia is also the biggest source of bi-coloured sapphires known as parti sapphires. Parti sapphires only occur naturally and cannot be synthetically created.

Colour has the most influence on the value of a sapphire, and in general the more intense and uniform the colour of the sapphire, the higher its value.
