Care Instructions & Manuals

Gemstone care, Antique care and Timepiece manuals

For fine jewellery to bring you joy for a lifetime, it will require regular maintenance. We strongly recommend that you visit a Gerard McCabe boutique annually to have your jewellery cleaned and inspected for wear and tear.

We always recommend you store your jewellery items individually, in a softly lined jewellery box or pouch when you are not wearing them. It is best to remove your jewellery when undertaking any manual activities such as dishwashing or gardening. Apply creams and perfumes before you put on your jewellery.

You can clean and care for your jewellery at home between boutique visits following the instructions below. Please be aware that some gemstones have very specific cleaning instructions so as not to damage them. If in doubt, leave it to a professional and pop in to see our experts in our Adelaide jewellery stores.

Jewellery Cleaning

  • Remove your diamond jewellery when you are doing manual tasks with your hands.
  • Clean your diamond jewellery regularly in a solution of warm water, dishwashing liquid and a dash of cloudy ammonia. You can brush around the settings gently with a soft toothbrush. Rinse and pat dry.

  • Pearl jewellery care stands by the simple rule: Last to be put on, first to be taken off. Ensure that you apply, and let dry, all perfumes, body creams and makeup well before you put on your pearl jewellery.
  • When you remove your pearl jewellery, wipe clean with a soft cloth before storing it in a softly lined jewellery box or pouch.
  • We recommend having your pearls cleaned by a professional from time to time.

  • To prevent the build-up of grime, remove your opal jewellery when washing dishes (in the case of a ring), showering or swimming.
  • Avoid chemicals, which may cause discolouration or damage to your opal (e.g. dishwashing liquid, chlorine, perfume).
  • Use a clean cloth for any light polishing of your jewellery and see us for a professional polish of the gold from time to time.
  • Avoid extreme change of temperature and direct heat.
  • Avoid dropping or knocking your opal product on hard surfaces.
  • If your opal is being kept for prolonged periods of time in a safe, place a small container of water in the safe along with your opal to ensure humidity is present. Alternatively, you can wrap the piece in damp cotton wool and place it in a sealed plastic bag.

Emeralds and Tanzanite are fragile gemstones that can be easily damaged by heat and ultrasonic cleaners. These gemstones are best left to professionals to clean.

  • Remove your jewellery when you are doing manual tasks with your hands.
  • Clean your jewellery regularly in a solution of warm water, dishwashing liquid and a dash of cloudy ammonia. You can brush around the settings gently with a soft toothbrush. Rinse and pat dry.
  • **If you have a piece from the Gerard McCabe Kaleidoscope collection, this style of jewellery is best cleaned by a professional and cannot be cleaned with an ultrasonic cleaner.

Part of the allure of antique jewellery is the history and patina that accompanies its great age. Vigorous cleaning methods can damage these pieces, thus we recommend bringing your piece in regularly for a professional clean. In between store cleans, store the pieces separately in a lined jewellery box, only wear your Antique jewellery as a dress piece and remove your jewellery when undertaking any manual tasks. Wipe over with a soft cloth after each wear.
