Rhodium plating is used on jewellery to create a surface that will resist scratches and tarnish, as well as provide a white, reflective appearance. It is used on white gold, which is an alloy of gold and white coloured metal and naturally is a dull grey colour prior to being plated.
The rich history of an antique piece is half the allure of buying it. When referring to history we mean not only its story, but also its age and the culture of the era in which it was created. Antique jewellery pieces are highly desirable items made so by nostalgia and memory. Yet so many people are confused as to the true characterisation of antique jewellery.
We’ve already established that Antique jewellery has to be over 100 years old to be truly considered an antique for evaluation purposes- but where do the terms vintage and retro come into play? It is quite tricky for the average or inexpert buyer to understand or properly identify these questions. Why? This is because as time inexorably marches on, the dates and allocations of retro, vintage and antique shift. So in 50 years time what was once retro will now be an antique piece. But currently, there is
At Gerard McCabe, most of our exquisite collections of Australian rings and jewellery are designed by Gerard, head designer Nazanin and their design team. Gerard works with top manufacturers in Australia and worldwide, to ensure our jewellery pieces are produced to the highest standards. When you buy a piece of jewellery from Gerard McCabe, you are buying from generations of heritage and expertise. Opening in 1986, we have 30 years of experience and acclaim under our belts. The McCabe family are fourth generation jewellers, and proudly so. When you purchase from Gerard McCabe jewellers, you are purchasing our family history, passion and drive. With that expertise comes loyalty, and an assurance that we are with you for life.
Our passionate and uncompromising pursuit of excellence drives everything we do. Our entire ethos revolves around quality and customer service. We like to ensure this in every facet of our business.
The typical timeline of our Bespoke Design Service can depend on many factors, but generally speaking from quotation approval to final product it is an 8-week process.
You would expect to have an initial (free of charge) consultation with Nazanin, our Design Director, followed by the development of the concept. Nazanin takes your ideas, hopes and ambitions for the piece from your discussion, and develops them into design sketches for discussion and your approval. You’ll receive a final quotation for the works. From this, you should expect to see your unique, one-of-a-kind jewellery created in around 8-weeks.
At Gerard McCabe boutiques you can request a valuation of your jewellery. As part of our service, your jewellery will be cleaned then assessed by an independent expert who will provide a written and photographic valuation suitable for insurance purposes. We will also assess the item for any damage or wear and tear issues and recommend any necessary repairs.
You will need to leave your jewellery with us for around 1-2 weeks to have the item assessed and the valuation completed.
Your Gerard McCabe Timepiece is covered by a three-year warranty against manufacturing defects. All our watches are manufactured to the highest standards. Your timepiece can be serviced or repaired (if need be) at one of our Adelaide jewellery stores. Gerard McCabe offers a loan watch service so you will never be without a Timepiece even while we are servicing your own.
If you visit a Gerard McCabe jewellery store, our team are more than happy to assist you and size your finger on the spot. Otherwise, you can use the Gerard McCabe online ring sizing guide, which you can print to determine your ring size with. Please note, paper measuring devices are never as accurate as having your finger sized by a professional.
If you are unable to visit a Gerard McCabe store in person, please contact us as our team can offer professional advice over the phone or email to assist you with this process.
Contact our Rundle Mall or Adelaide Arcade diamond boutique to arrange the purchase of a gift card. If you are seeking to purchase one through our online store, contact our Head Office team.
Yes. Gerard McCabe engagement ring designs can be customised in a number of ways. You can customise the main diamond to your preferred specifications with our strict diamond standards. You can customise the metal type (Platinum or 18ct Gold in White, Yellow or Rose colour). You can often select from a diamond set or classic band, within the limitations of the design. Gerard McCabe Jewellery can often be customised to your preferred metal colour - such as white, yellow or rose gold.
Gerard McCabe also offers a bespoke jewellery design service, allowing customers to design their own, one-of-a-kind jewellery piece. These can be inspired by current Gerard McCabe collection designs, however, we encourage clients to work with our award-winning Design Director, Nazanin to create a piece that is truly suited to their individual style.
Yes. Gerard McCabe Jewellers can arrange jewellery engraving. Visit one of our diamond boutiques to discuss the options. Prices may vary depending on the type of engraving you request.
At Gerard McCabe we offer hand engraving - as this will last forever, it doesn’t wear out, and remains as it was when it was first etched. The look of hand engraving is deeper than that of machine engraving - adding impressive structure and detail to your ring.
Hand engraving is extremely flexible, meaning the artist can work with a variety of surfaces and achieve an excellent result no matter the type of surface.
Yes. Gerard McCabe has a wide selection of pre-approved diamonds on hand that we are able to set into your preferred style. This can be further discussed with a Sales Consultant when discussing your budget and quality preferences.
How long before my jewellery arrives? Generally speaking, if you order something from our current collections it will be ready for collection six weeks from order date. That being said, anything created through our Bespoke Service, or if the piece itself is a complex design will entail a minimum eight-week delivery. Your sales consultant will be able to advise a more precise delivery timeframe at the time of placing your order.
Platinum is a harder and more durable substance in comparison to gold. It takes a long time for jewellers to create the products - it’s harder to work with and manipulate.
At Gerard McCabe Jewellers, platinum is more expensive as our jewellers use new platinum in all pieces created. The time and craftsmanship required to create these pieces incur a greater premium.
As a consumer, when purchasing platinum jewellery it is helpful to note that it requires minimal ongoing maintenance. Platinum is already a white, bright metal. It will scuff up a little with wear, as all jewellery does, but a simple polish by our jeweller and your platinum metal will look like new again.
White gold, in comparison, is a cheaper metal to purchase but is a more expensive metal to maintain. Being naturally dull grey in colour, you will want to have your white gold jewellery Rhodium Plated every 1-3 years to maintain the bright, white colour.
Gerard McCabe designs many unique designs and thus has a lot of one off jewellery pieces in our collection. We also stock a range of one-of-a-kind Antique jewellery. As these pieces are unique, they can only be available in one store at any one time.
We rotate our jewellery between stores quite often, so if there is a particular piece you are interested in looking at we encourage you to book an appointment to view the piece at your preferred store.
We will arrange the jewellery to be at your selected boutique in time for your consultation - no deposit or payment is required for this inter-store transfer.
