Alluring opal is October’s beloved birthstone and one of Australia’s most iconic gemstones. Most famously found in Coober Pedy, South Australia and Lightning Ridge, New South Wales, it is celebrated for its mesmerising brilliance and extraordinary play of colour.
The name opal is derived from the Greek opallos, meaning “to see a change of colour.” As each Australian opal is unique, its natural variations offer a spectacular array of colours, shapes and sizes. As the stone catches the light and is rotated, fiery hues shift and dance across its surface, revealing an ever-changing interplay of colour.
